GRELL & ENCR
First joint Conference of the Group for Epidemiology and Cancer Registry in Latin Language Countries (GRELL) and the European Network of Cancer Registries (ENCR), held in Porto, Portugal, from 27th to 30th May 2025.
On May 29, 2025, Claire Poulalhon (epidemiologist) delivered at the GRELL&ENCR conference an oral presentation on the results of the study «Survival after childhood neuroblastoma in mainland France (2000-2016) – A national registry-based study». Brigitte Lacour (epidemiologist) also displayed a poster presentation during the meeting entitled «Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on childhood cancer incidence and stage in France – A national registry-based study».
In 2025, the GRELL&ENCR meeting marks an important initiative with a first joint conference bringing together international experts in the field of cancer registration and epidemiology. These two networks work together to improve cancer surveillance and control, through data-driven and science-based collaboration. Over 30 countries took part in the event, hosted by the Comprehensive Cancer Centre of Porto, Portugal.
The conference provided a comprehensive overview of key developments in cancer data management, focusing on preparing European registries for the implementation of the new ICD-O-4 classification, showcasing the European Health Data Space (EHDS), and exploring strategies to improve the timeliness of cancer registration. Additionally, it highlighted the potential of recent AI advancements and emerging digital tools to enhance data consistency and quality, emphasizing the importance of integrating innovative technologies to strengthen cancer surveillance and research across Europe.
Cancer registries presented their work and shared a common language focused on data, science and public health. By providing a standardized approach with accurate and high-quality data, cancer registries play a vital role in guiding health authorities to better orient prevention policies to optimize patient care and strengthen cancer surveillance in Europe.
